Sorry to burst your bubble but you CAN lose weight!
December 31, 2008
I’ve come across and trained people who have wanted to lose weight for quite sometime, but haven’t really put much effort into it. They try one thing, or two or three things, such as a new diet or whatever new exercise or piece of exercise equipment that is hot at the moment. They jump from new thing, to new thing, without finding the right thing and sticking to it and then give up and believe that their body isn’t made for weight loss. Or because they’ve had more pounds on than they care for a long time, they just settle and believe that it was meant to be.
Here are some tips to get the pounds to start falling off:
1. Pass on the fad diets and get into what works long term.
- lean foods, proteins, carbs, fats, fiber, keep hydrated- water works
2. Exercise
3. There will be times when you wont want to keep up with the workout or good eating, find something or someone to motivate you. Figure out exactly why you are working out and exactly why you want/need to lose weight
4.You’ll need to exercise more than once a week. Once a week wont do anything for you. You can forget about what you did last week.
5. Reward yourself for keeping up. Not with sweets or a day off from the gym. Buy yourself a new outfit or something
6. If you are truly working hard to lose weight, but can’t- see your Dr. there could be some other issue that he/she can uncover
7. Seek professional help (trainer, fitness manager)
8. Get serious about your health

Why wait to lose weight?
December 30, 2008
Just a short post to ask, why are you waiting? Today is the day. Why wait until Jan 1? Why hold yourself back from getting the body and health and strength that you deserve? The sooner, the better, the longer you wait the harder it will be to get what you want. Start now. You do not have to go all out especially if this will be your first time in a long time working out. Set some goals. Why do you want to lose the weight? Why do you NEED to lose weight? How often are you going to exercise? Day by day little by little.
Imagine..
Just imagine achieving all of those great things that life has to offer when you have better health.
Imagine being able to go up and down the stairs faster.
Imagine being able to carry more grocery bags in the house from the car and make less trips.
Imagine lifting up your baby or chasing your kids around the house without getting out of breath.
Imagine walking up a flight of stairs without losing your breath
Imagine breathing better
Imagine being better able to handle stress. No more racing heart, no more shaking, no more headaches..
Imaging chasing down the bus or cab with ease
Imagine no more high blood pressure
Imagine no more high cholesterol
Imagine surprising your doctors at your next visits
Much much more to get from working out…

Got Shin Splints?
December 29, 2008

Runners, other athletes as well as fitness enthusiasts get it. It is very common in active people. The pain in the front of our lower leg known as shin splints. What a bummer to have. An excuse to stop working out for some- but I’m not gonna let it stop you.
Some causes
Exercising on concrete or uneven ground
Working out in shoes that don’t fit properly
Here’s exactly what it is and how to manage it.
To prevent or reduce shin splints you’ve got to know your foot type so that you can purchase the right athletic shoes. Foot types are flat foot, high arch, or neutral foot. How do you know your foot type you ask? Check out your foot prints. The deeper the indent- the higher the arch in the foot. Also, check with a fitness or medical professional. If you have shin splints, no matter what foot type you have, the pain worsens during and after exercise. Take care of you leg and get a good shoe.
Neutral Foot and Shin Splints
Not prone to shin splints
Flat Foot and Shin Splints
Here the arch collases under pressure
The muscle’s starts to detach from the tibia (bone) because of excessive forces
Will feel pain on the lower inside of leg
High Arch and Shin Splints
Not good at absorbing shock
The pain here is tender when touched
Will see swelling
Forces here are transfered up the leg
Bone is prone to hairline fractures
Shoes for Flat Foot
Look for something with a sturdy heel cup. You will want to keep the heels stabile above the sole
You will also want rigid soles from toes to heel
Flexible toes
Shoes for High Arch
You will definately need shock absorption
Something cushiony that you can jump up and down in
Flexible toes

Exercise is Tailor Made
December 26, 2008
I’m sure we’ve all heard this at some point or another in our lives that “every BODY is different” in regards to different topics. In this post I am referring to fitness and exercise. Every body is different here. We’ve all got different fitness goals from one another, we’ve all got different lifestyles, different fitness, activity and health backgrounds. The way one person trains or workouts may not work for you. For example, I’ve had a client tell me that before training she’s been trying to keep up with what the celebs were doing so that she can lose weight and look they way they do.
If you’re one who thinks this way let me tell you, they have the lifestyle, the money, and the time to spend to look the way they do. What they do may not even fit into your busy work schedule or your budget. Find something that does. There is something out there for everyone. Now just because you work all day, and take care of the family at night doesnt mean there isnt hope. There are different ways to fit training and healthy eating in your schedule that will still help you reach your health and fitness goals. What you read about the way celebs train in magazines usually isnt all that they do as exercise to look the way they do. You will probably only read a part of a whole program that is designed specifically for them.
Again, find something for you. Get help. Ask a professional at your gym (trainer, fitness manager, personal training manager) or see if your doctor can recommend a fitness professional or google one in your area to give you a full assessment. Tell him/her your goals. Go from there.
Even the way your best friend trains will vary from the way you may need to.

Sometimes You Just Have to Put Yourself First
December 24, 2008
This post was inspired by one of my old clients. A young lady who never walked into a gym (but definately needed to) because of the people she surrounded herself with. Not that they were a “bad crowd”, they just never dug working out and thought it wasn’t cool. She knew on the inside that she had to workout but didn’t want to because of what she thought her friends may have thought of her. After talking with her she soon got over that and loved the gym. Eventually, some of those same friends joined the gym as well.
What I wanted to say here is screw what they think or will think about you if you do something that will benefit you in so many ways.
And for those men and women who are intimidated by other gym members the same goes for you. Years later they probably won’t even remember you or be in your life.
Keep your goals in mind and go after them.
Some tips here are:
1) Listen to your music and dont look at anyone in the gym. Get in your own world
2) Go to the gym prepared with your program in hand. If one of the machines or piece of equipment that you need is in use, go to the next exercise and come back to that one. It’s ok to skip order.
3) Hire and trainer. Click HERE to learn how to choose one
4) Surround yourself with positive thinkers. Those who will motivate you to do good for yourself.

Give Your Cardio a Kick!
December 14, 2008
Go Faster! Now a Little Slower Baby!
Give your cardio a kick with interval training (best way to burn fat). By alternating periods of more intense exercise with periods of less intense exercise you’re demanding more of your body and thus burning calories quickly. For example, on a treadmill, or any form of cardio, in between a 5-10 minute warm up and cool down, for 1 minute run at 10mph and then for 2 minutes run at 5mph. Repeat the cycle for 20 minutes. Intensity will vary depending on your fitness level. Consult your Dr. before starting something new.

8 Ways to Beat Stress
December 7, 2008
Here are 8 ways for you to beat stress. T’is the season to feel a little stress especially if you are one to leave holiday shopping until the last minute. These work anytime of the year as well.
1. Laugh- call up old friends who you can joke with and bring up funny memories
2. Treat yourself this season- put yourself on top of your shopping list this year.
3. Leave the desk for lunch- try to get your mind off of work for at least the lunch break
4. If it’s hard to leave the desk for lunch, get up and take a walk around the block when you get a break.
5. Go jogging or bike riding
6. During your commute to and from work, lock the world out of your world. Ignore the phone and sit back and listen to some music or read a good book.
7. Exercise- this is a great way to beat stress and feel happy
8. Try not to save your holiday shopping until the last minute. If shopping online you’ll want that piece of minid when your gifts deliver on time. If going to the stores, trust me, you’ll feel stressed out when those shelves are empty and you still have quite a few people to shop for.
